Giving back to the community

Recently, MI Transport was able to support the local community by helping to transport donated theatre seating for a youth theatre charity.

Silhouette Youth Theatre had fifteen rows of nine seats donated by the Royal Shakespeare Company a while back, and poised with transport and load at the ready, our enthusiastic team was quick to get stuck in and move them from storage into the theatre’s new space.

“I called a few companies to see if they could help, and it was MI Transport who offered to bring them here for us” said Leigh Wolmarans, CEO and Artistic Director of Silhouette.

“They were amazing. The MI Transport team, with help from the Shurgard Self Storage at Riverside at one end, and some of our neighbours from Lok’nStore and Clip and Climb in the centre, pitched in to help bring the seats over here and unload them.”

The charity was founded by former headteacher Leigh to provide children access to the arts, and the chance to explore drama, music and dance, regardless of family background or socio-economic status.

Julie Knowles, MI Transport’s HGV Supervisor said: “Most of our staff live locally, have children going to school locally, and as a company MI Transport is keen to do as much as it can to help within the community, wherever it can.”

Celebrating Women in Logistics on International Women’s Day

Celebrating International Women's Day with women in logistics at MI Transport

In celebration of International Women’s Day this year (March 8th 2025), at MI Transport we’re marking this important occasion by celebrating women in transport and logistics, especially our MI transport female colleagues.

The logistics and transport (industry) remains disproportionately male, especially in senior positions. Research from The Chartered Institute of Logistics (CILT) from 2024 said that just 23% of workers in the industry are women, with over half of organisations lacking any initiatives or targets to improve their gender diversity.

Some great progress has been made in recent years with more women joining the logistics industry. We asked some of the amazing women who work at MI Transport for their thoughts on the logistics industry and what advice they would give to other women considering a career in logistics.

MI Transport Female Colleagues

Here’s what our MI transport female colleagues had to say:

Julie Knowles (pictured) shared how she had seen the industry change over time:

“The gender divide in logistics has changed – I started as a warehouse person in 1999, and I was the only female forklift driver in a warehouse of 176 men. Over the years the number of women in logistics has increased from labourer to artic drivers and warehouse managers to directors.”

Olivia chose to highlight the impostor syndrome that many women feel in male-dominated industries:

“Women can feel like they don’t belong in certain roles or positions despite their qualifications. Addressing this psychological barrier can empower women to take risks, apply for higher positions, and believe in their potential. Organisations can implement programs and workshops to help employees (especially women) overcome self-doubt and boost their confidence.”

Shannon encouraged those considering a career in logistics to get involved:

“If you are thinking about it, do it! It is a fast-paced industry, and you have to be hard faced at some points, but it is worth it to see the wheels turning.”

Lastly, Peach-Marie offered encouragement to those looking to build their careers:

“Be brave, be real and do not shy away from what makes you you! Build a network of support around you and never be afraid to speak up!”

This year’s theme for IWD is #AccelerateAction, so we would like to encourage any other women working in the logistics and transport industry to share their thoughts on the industry and how we can achieve progress towards gender equality.

By working together and sharing many ideas, we can keep improving the industry for the women in it. See more of our what our employees had to say on our LinkedIn.

MI Transport Look Ahead for 2025

2025 looks set to be a busy year for MI Transport and the logistics industry. New opportunities and pressures abound for all involved, with complex challenges to overcome.

What will 2025 look like for MI Transport?

The years since the pandemic shook up the industry have been all about pursuing steady and sustainable growth, strengthening our working relationships with both our clients and suppliers. We aim to maintain this important part of our strategy in 2025 by continuing to provide excellent services.

Over 2024, we invested in building one of the strongest sales departments in the county. We believe this has positioned us well to scale effectively and widen our bandwidth within the industry.

With the new team members and our wider range of services, we are excited for the new year. We now offer import/export, air, sea, and road freight, along with ecommerce services. We look forward to continuing our exceptional business courier services.

What will the logistics industry look like in 2025?

Unfortunately, it is highly likely that more hauliers will go under in 2025. Industry pressures and logistics trends are such that it will be difficult for businesses with less sturdy foundations to survive in the current climate. Thankfully, MI Transport will be on hand to support staff, clients, and businesses affected through difficult times.

When will businesses need to begin planning for the next peak season?

Most businesses will need to plan far in advance for peak seasons. However, MI Transport’s clients will be allowed more flexibility. The size of our fleet, calibre of staff and agility will allow us to meet customer demands with little notice, even at peak times.

MI Transport Appoint a Senior Business Development Manager

MI Transport is pleased to announce the appointment of Peach-Marie Ralph as our new Senior Business Development Manager.

Peach has been with the company for two months, previously working as a freight forwarder predominantly in European and global sea freight. She has worked with MI Transport in previous roles and has now joined the company to assist with our ambitious business expansion projects.

We spoke to Peach about her role, MI’s European expansion and the future of the industry.

What does your new role entail?

I’ve joined MI as a Senior Business Development Manager, with a view to supporting the business’s expansion in Europe.

While we have our own fleet and warehouse in the UK, we’re looking at increasing our operations in Europe and globally. Even in the short time I’ve been here, we’ve been able to establish significant new business and operation within the EU and are working to continue to expand. I have some previous relationships with businesses who have chosen to work with MI going forward, which has allowed us to build quickly.

Our next step is to expand a team around me who will be able to operate from within Europe, supporting our clients and our continued expansion. We’ve already supported some large projects, including the touring Les Misérables show in Italy at the moment, which required coordinating seven vehicles and a police escort!

What do you enjoy about your job?

I love offering customers solutions. I thrive in high pressure environments, and I relish finding unusual, time-critical solutions to problems, especially with customs and borders where I feel I have some unique expertise. I’m excited to be able to offer these to MI Transport’s customers moving forward.

What are your ambitions for 2025?

Our primary ambition is to continue our European expansion and become fully established as a European supplier, on which we’ve made an amazing start. We would also love to offer more modes of transport, including sea and air freight. To do that we’ll need to expand the team, so I’m looking forward to welcoming more people to the business.

How do you see the industry developing in 2025?

The biggest challenge for the industry at the moment is the cost of fuel, which is likely to increase further. Aside from that, other pressures like the minimum wage increase and any taxation changes from the new Government may prove to be difficult.
